Edit without re-compression
Audio editors like Audacity, Adobe Audition, and Logic Pro work best with uncompressed WAV files. Editing and re-saving an MP3 adds generation loss each time. Converting to WAV first keeps your edits clean.
Required by pro tools
Many broadcast systems, DAWs, CD authoring tools, and audio processing APIs require WAV input. Converting your MP3 to WAV ensures compatibility without needing dedicated audio software.
Private & secure
Your audio files are uploaded over HTTPS, processed on our servers, never shared with third parties, and permanently deleted after 1 hour.

Common questions

Does converting MP3 to WAV improve quality?

No — and this is a common misconception. MP3 is a lossy format; converting to WAV doesn't recover the audio information that was discarded when the MP3 was created. The WAV will be uncompressed and larger, but the audio quality ceiling is still the quality of the source MP3. Converting is useful for compatibility and editing workflows, not for improving fidelity.

Why is the WAV file so much larger than the MP3?

WAV stores raw, uncompressed PCM audio data — typically 44,100 samples per second at 16 bits per channel. A 3-minute song that's 7 MB as an MP3 can become 30–50 MB as a WAV. The audio content is identical; WAV just doesn't apply any compression, which is exactly what makes it preferable for editing.

What sample rate and bit depth does Formatly use for WAV output?

Formatly outputs WAV at 44,100 Hz (CD quality) and 16-bit depth by default — the standard for music and voice recordings. This matches the quality level of the source MP3 and is compatible with all audio editing software and playback devices.

Is there a file size limit?

Free users can convert MP3 files up to 25 MB without an account, or up to 10 conversions per day with a free account. Pro users get 500 MB per file and 3,000 credits a month. Business users get up to 5 GB.
