Is BMP to PNG lossless?
Yes. Both formats are lossless — every pixel from the original BMP is preserved exactly in the PNG. The size difference comes from PNG's compression, not from quality loss.
When should I prefer BMP to PNG?
For modern use — websites, sharing, archiving, editing — PNG is almost always better. BMP only really wins in a few legacy Windows scenarios where applications expect raw bitmap input (very old desktop publishing software, certain industrial tools).
What if I want even smaller files?
If the image has photographic content rather than flat colours, JPG or WEBP will be much smaller still — JPG is lossy though. Use our PNG to JPG tool afterwards, or convert BMP directly to JPG by switching the output format on the converter page.
